The Blades are an ancient order of warriors who once served as bodyguards and spies for the Dragonborn emperors of Tamriel. Their roots go back to the Akaviri Dragonguard, and at heart they have always been dragonslayers. After the Great War, the Thalmor hunted them almost to extinction.
The last Blades
By the time of Skyrim, only two Blades seem to remain: Delphine, hiding as an innkeeper in Riverwood, and Esbern, the order’s archivist, hiding in the Ratway beneath Riften.
Role in the main quest
Delphine reveals herself in A Blade in the Dark, and together with Esbern the Blades help you investigate the return of the dragons. In Alduin’s Wall they reclaim their ancient stronghold, Sky Haven Temple.
Rebuilding the Blades
Once Sky Haven Temple is restored, Delphine asks you to recruit new members. Many of your followers can join – see the best followers guide for ideas.
The Paarthurnax problem
The Blades believe every dragon must die – including Paarthurnax. Later, they refuse to help you any further unless you kill him. It is one of the biggest moral choices in the main quest.
Rewards & benefits
Blades armor and weapons, Sky Haven Temple, Esbern's anti-dragon bonuses and recruited followers in Blades gear.
