The Greybeards are an ancient order of monks devoted to the Way of the Voice – the study of the Thu’um, the dragon tongue that mortals can use as Shouts. They live in near-silence at High Hrothgar, high on the Throat of the World.
Members
- Arngeir – the only one who speaks normally, acting as spokesman and teacher.
- Borri, Einarth and Wulfgar – whose voices are so powerful that speaking is dangerous.
- Paarthurnax – the dragon who lives at the summit and is the Greybeards’ true master.
Philosophy
The Greybeards believe the Voice should be used for worship and inner understanding, not for war. They stay out of politics – which is exactly why both sides of the civil war still respect them.
Role in the main quest
The Greybeards summon you after Dragon Rising and train you in The Way of the Voice and The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. Later they lead you to Paarthurnax and host the peace council in Season Unending.
Good to know
You cannot formally join the Greybeards, but they will teach you Words of Power throughout the game.
