Commander Caius

Commander Caius is the Imperial officer commanding Whiterun's city guard, best known for arresting Sabjorn after the poisoned mead in Dampened Spirits.

Commander Caius is an Imperial soldier and the commander of the guard in Whiterun. He is confident his boys will keep you safe, and equally keen to advise you against causing trouble in his beautiful city.

Where to find them

He is stationed in Whiterun as long as the city stays loyal to the Empire. If the city changes hands, look for him at the Blue Palace in Solitude.

Quests

Dampened Spirits: once you have tainted the latest batch at Honningbrew Meadery, Caius arrives for a tasting, takes one swig of the Honningbrew Reserve, recoils, and hauls the owner Sabjorn off to the dungeon in Dragonsreach, leaving Mallus Maccius in charge of the meadery.

Civil War: if the Stormcloaks win the Battle for Whiterun, Caius loses his post to Sinmir. Like Balgruuf, Irileth, Hrongar and Proventus, he flees to Jarl Elisif‘s court in exile. There he insists that he will always be a commander and that the Legion will take the city back.

Personality & relationships

Caius takes himself rather seriously. Not everyone in town is impressed: Sinmir, a regular at the Bannered Mare, calls him a preening rooster who can’t keep his men in line and boasts he could do the job blindfolded. Caius, meanwhile, is quick to judge others and has little patience for anyone he considers dishonourable.

Good to know

Caius is essential and can’t be killed.
