Idolaf Battle-Born is a Nord of the Battle-Born clan in Whiterun. Like the rest of his family he backs the Imperial Legion, and he wants everyone to know it. He is married to Alfhild and they have a son, Lars.
Where to find them
The first time you enter Whiterun he is out in the street haggling with the blacksmith Adrianne Avenicci. He lives in the Battle-Born family house in the city.
Quests
Missing in Action – Idolaf knows what really happened to Thorald Gray-Mane. If you persuade him, he admits that he and Thorald were once friends, that he used Legion contacts to look into the disappearance, and that the Thalmor took Thorald to Northwatch Keep. He hands over the last message he received, insisting Thorald is never coming back.
Personality & relationships
His opening line to strangers is a demand to know which side they are on, Gray-Mane or Battle-Born. Pick the Battle-Borns and he treats you as a friend; pick the Gray-Manes and he writes you off as a fool or a rebel. To him the Empire stands for progress and the Stormcloaks are stuck in the past.
His feud with the Gray-Manes is personal. He was childhood best friends with Avulstein Gray-Mane but now calls him a traitor, and he and his father Olfrid trade insults with Fralia Gray-Mane in the street. When Adrianne suggests getting Eorlund Gray-Mane to help with a big weapons order for the Legion, Idolaf says he would rather kneel to Ulfric Stormcloak.
Good to know
Side with the Battle-Borns when he asks and most items in their house can be taken without it counting as theft, apart from a few silver ingots and potions.
