Hrongar is a Nord warrior and the younger brother of Balgruuf the Greater, Jarl of Whiterun. He serves as a bodyguard at court and describes himself as a weapon in human form, just waiting for someone to point him at an enemy.
Where to find them
He lives in Dragonsreach. Most of the time he is either eating at the big table in the main hall or pacing the palace corridors with nothing to hit.
Quests
Hrongar is present when you return to Dragonsreach at the end of Dragon Rising. When the Greybeards’ call thunders across the land, he is the first to recognise it as a summons to High Hrothgar, something that hasn’t happened in centuries. During The Way of the Voice he will explain what being Dragonborn means and urge you to go and meet The Greybeards.
Personality & relationships
Hrongar holds Nord customs sacred and has a short fuse for anyone who mocks them. When the steward Proventus Avenicci dismisses the Greybeards as “Nord nonsense”, Hrongar explodes, and Balgruuf has to tell him to calm down. The two argue regularly; at one point Hrongar even tries to recruit Proventus to nudge the Jarl towards doing more for the war, and gets turned down.
Despite his love of tradition, he is no friend of the Stormcloaks. He thinks Whiterun has spent too long standing around and should go after them directly. He also takes a jab at his brother’s advisors, joking that Balgruuf really listens to Proventus’s daughter, the blacksmith Adrianne Avenicci.
Good to know
He is essential, so he can’t be killed. Unused material in the game’s files suggests he was once meant to take over as Jarl in The Whispering Door, but that plan never made it into the finished game.
