Winterhold

Winterhold is the ruined capital of Winterhold hold – most of it fell into the sea in the Great Collapse, leaving a handful of houses and the College of Winterhold.

Winterhold was once one of the great cities of Skyrim. Then came the Great Collapse, when most of the city slid into the Sea of Ghosts. Today only a handful of buildings remain on the snowy cliffs – and, across a long stone bridge, the towers of the College of Winterhold, which many locals blame for the disaster.

Highlights

  • The Jarl’s Longhouse – seat of Jarl Korir, who refuses to abandon what is left of his home.
  • The Frozen Hearth – the town’s inn.
  • The ruins – broken houses on the cliff edge, a reminder of what Winterhold used to be.
  • The bridge to the College, Skyrim’s only school of magic.

Quests

Ask Jarl Korir for work and he sends you to recover the Helm of Winterhold, hoping to restore a little of his hold’s lost pride. Most visitors, however, come here for the College and its questline.

Good to know

Winterhold’s people have little love for mages. Expect some grumbling if you walk through town in robes.
