Helm of Winterhold

The ancestral steel horned helmet of Winterhold’s jarls, recovered for Jarl Korir from a random dungeon as the first step toward becoming Thane.

The Helm of Winterhold is a unique heavy helmet, a horned steel design once worn by Jarl Hanse of Winterhold back in the First Era. It has no enchantment at all; its value is historical, and for you it is mostly a key that opens the door to becoming Thane of Winterhold.

How to get it

Speak with Korir, the jarl of Winterhold. He asks you to find the lost helm, and the game picks a random dungeon to hide it in. Possible spots include:

Follow the quest marker, fight your way to the helm and bring it back to Korir. You get a leveled gold reward and the jarl’s favor, which is the prerequisite for the Thane path and its prize, the Blade of Winterhold.

Is it worth wearing?

Not really, and that is fine. With an armor rating of 17 and no enchantment it is simply a steel horned helmet with a fancy name, and the quest wants it delivered to the jarl anyway. Treat it as a plot token and a step toward the thaneship rather than gear for your build.

If you like the horned look, the regular steel helmet is basically the same thing, and you can craft and improve it yourself. Where this helm shines is in the story it tells: Winterhold was once a great city, and returning the old jarl’s helmet is a small, symbolic win for a hold that has lost most of its former glory to the sea. It is also a decent excuse to visit one of the hold’s spookier dungeons.

Good to know

  • Getting the helm or doing Rescue from Fort Kastav both unlock the Thane of Winterhold quest.
  • Some random locations overlap with other quests, so the helm may show up in a dungeon you visit for something else.
  • It is one of several jarls’ favor quests that send you after a family heirloom.
