Werewolves are people cursed – or blessed, depending on who you ask – by the Daedric Prince Hircine. In beast form they’re towering, howling killers. In Skyrim you can fight them in the wild, or become one yourself.
Becoming a werewolf
The most common route is through the Companions: during their questline, Aela the Huntress offers you the blood of the beast. As a werewolf you can transform once a day, feed on corpses to extend the transformation, and unlock perks in the Dawnguard add-on.
Where to find them
In the base game you meet hostile werewolves only at fixed places – for example caged in Silver Hand forts like Gallows Rock and Driftshade Refuge. With Dawnguard installed they can also ambush you in the wilderness at night. On Solstheim (Dragonborn), the Frostmoon Pack lives at Frostmoon Crag. The Silver Hand, a group of werewolf hunters, are their sworn enemies.
Variants
Hostile werewolves scale with your level, from the basic Werewolf through Savage, Brute, Skinwalker and Beastmaster up to the Vargr at level 38. Every step up gives them harder-hitting claws.
Abilities & attacks
- Very fast, powerful claw attacks
- Howls that can terrify enemies
- Can feed on corpses to heal
How to beat it
Silver weapons deal extra damage – the Silver Hand carry them, and you can craft silver swords. Use a shield to absorb the flurries and strike when it pauses. Don't let it corner you; werewolves are faster than you.
Loot & harvestables
With Dawnguard: Wolf Pelt, Human Flesh, leveled gold, gems and rings
Lore & trivia
Lycanthropy comes from Hircine, Daedric Prince of the Hunt. The Companions' werewolf secret goes back generations, and not all members are happy about it – Kodlak Whitemane wants to be free of it.
