Dustman’s Cairn is an ancient Nordic tomb southeast of Morthal and south-southeast of Labyrinthian. From Whiterun, head west past the Western Watchtower to Fort Greymoor, then turn north. The door stays sealed until the Companions quest Proving Honor is active, so this is your first big outing as a would-be Companion – with Farkas as your shield-sibling. The game files count the cairn as part of the Reach, even though most maps and guides place it in Whiterun Hold.
What you’ll find
- First room: a skill book on a table and a novice-locked chest, then the first draugr.
- The lever room: pulling the lever locks you in, the Silver Hand surround Farkas, and he reveals that he’s a werewolf in spectacular fashion. From here on you face a mix of Silver Hand and draugr.
- Locked doors: a large room with an iron door whose key is in a chest in the same room, and an adept-locked wooden door with ingredients in the room before it.
- Behind the iron door: skeevers, an alchemy lab and a side passage to a lair with a giant frostbite spider and a regular one.
- Waterfall and catwalks with more draugr, then a passage lined with burial niches.
- The altar room: the Wuuthrad fragment, a Word Wall, urns, a chest and 19 sarcophagi – 17 of them occupied.
- An arcane enchanter and an alchemy lab.
Quests
Proving Honor – your job is simple on paper: recover a fragment of Wuuthrad for the Companions. In practice, grabbing it wakes up the whole altar room, and the Silver Hand turn out to be after the same tomb.
Notable items
- Word Wall: a word of the Fire Breath shout (Yol, “Fire”).
- Two-Handed skill book Battle of Sancre Tor in the first room.
- Shard of Wuuthrad (quest item).
- A ruby set into a mural of Potema Septim after the stream and catwalks – hit it with a spell or shout that affects the environment to knock it loose.
Tips
Learn the Word Wall before you touch the fragment, then position yourself near the stairs: 17 draugr climbing out at once is a lot, and Farkas appreciates a doorway to hold. When it’s over, skip the long walk back – take the stairs up in the altar room and slip through the opening in one of the coffins. The secret passage drops you back at the start.
Good to know
“Dustman” is a Nord nickname for draugr, which tells you exactly who lives here. The cairn is also one of the rare interiors with birds’ nests indoors. The Word Wall commemorates Jafnhar, a child king burned alive by the great dragon Lodunost.
