The Hunt

Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi send you to a town to quietly kill a Dawnguard agent posing as a merchant, bard or pilgrim.

The Hunt is a vampire-side quest in the Dawnguard add-on. A Dawnguard member has been spotted wandering a town in disguise, posing as a traveling merchant, bard or pilgrim. Fura Bloodmouth or Garan Marethi of the Volkihar Clan want them dead, preferably without the whole town noticing.

How to start

Walkthrough

Find the disguised agent

The quest picks a random settlement. Possible towns are Dawnstar, Dragon Bridge, Falkreath, Ivarstead, Karthwasten, Kynesgrove, Markarth, Morthal, Nightgate Inn, Old Hroldan, Riften, Riverwood, Rorikstead, Shor’s Stone, Solitude, Whiterun, Windhelm, Winterhold and, with the Dragonborn add-on, Raven Rock. Follow the quest marker to the target.

Kill the target (discreetly, if you can)

Killing the agent is required. Doing it without witnesses is an optional objective. A few approaches suggested by the source:

  • Lure them away. With enough Speech, persuade or intimidate the target into following you somewhere quiet, then strike.
  • Snipe from hiding. A high Sneak skill lets you kill them from a concealed spot.
  • Hide your identity. Transform into a werewolf or Vampire Lord somewhere out of sight, kill the target and flee. Everyone turns hostile, and according to the source you still fail the discreet objective, at least on Xbox 360 and PS3.
  • Let the guards do it. With strong enough Illusion, cast Fury on the target while hidden. They attack everyone and the guards cut them down.
  • Soul Trap trick. Cast Soul Trap on the target so they turn hostile toward you, lead them out of town, sheathe your weapon to end the fight and finish them off unseen, with no bounty.

Return to the quest giver

Head back to Castle Volkihar and report to Fura or Garan.

Rewards

  • A leveled enchanted item, or
  • Three Potions of Blood

Tips and notes

  • The optional discreet objective is the whole point of the job as far as your employers are concerned: the journal explicitly asks for a quiet kill. Out in the open, an attack on the agent will look like murder to the town guards.
  • Look for a traveling merchant, bard or pilgrim near the marker: that cover story is your target.
  • The same quest givers also hand out Protecting the Bloodline, so you can take both on one visit.

Objectives

Kill the disguised Dawnguard member
(Optional) Make it a discreet kill

Choices & consequences

Known bugs & fixes

The target may spawn inside Honeyside in Riften (buying Honeyside and re-entering Riften may fix it). On PC a Riverwood target may spawn in an inaccessible copy of the Sleeping Giant Inn.
