Sam Guevenne

Sam Guevenne is a Breton who challenges you to a drinking contest in a tavern, kicking off A Night to Remember, before revealing himself as Sanguine.

Sam Guevenne looks like a friendly Breton mage in black robes who enjoys a drink a little too much. In reality he is the Daedric Prince of Debauchery, Sanguine, in disguise. He is the starting point of the Daedric quest A Night to Remember, one of the most entertaining hangovers in Skyrim.

Where to find them

Sam isn’t tied to one place. He appears in the tavern closest to wherever you are when you reach level 14, and once you’ve found him he stays in that tavern until you take him up on his challenge. Although he is grouped with the Whiterun characters, he can show up in any town’s inn.

Quests

In A Night to Remember, Sam offers you a drinking contest with a staff as the prize. His special brew is strong stuff. After the third round you black out and wake up in the Temple of Dibella in Markarth, facing an angry priestess and a mess you have no memory of making. Tracing your steps sends you through Rorikstead and on to Morvunskar, where a portal leads to Misty Grove.

There Sam drops the act. The repair materials you were told to collect were never needed. He just wanted to see you go out and spread some chaos, and he says he hasn’t been this entertained in a century. As promised, he hands over the Sanguine Rose, a Daedric staff that summons a Dremora Lord.

Personality & relationships

Sam is cheerful, boastful and impossible to offend. He picks you because he thinks you’re going places and could use some influence from your “old uncle Sanguine”. He bristles at the idea that it was all just a prank, insisting the Lord of Debauchery doesn’t deal in anything so small.

Combat

He is essential and level 50. If you attack him, he calls up a Dremora Lord, the same summon as Conjure Dremora Lord. If you enter the portal as a werewolf, he uses lightning spells instead.

Good to know

  • The quest objective misspells him as “Sam Guenvere”. Internally the game calls him Samwell or Sammy.
  • After the quest, a random encounter with the Argonian Deep-In-His-Cups reveals that you and Sam also dared him to steal a hat from a bandit camp that night.
  • Some players never black out after his “you don’t look so good” line, which stalls the quest.
