Olfina Gray-Mane is a Nord barmaid in Whiterun and a proud member of the Gray-Mane clan. She sees herself as a warrior maiden first and a barmaid second, and she will happily tell you there’s nothing a man can do that she can’t do better. Like the rest of her family, she backs the Stormcloaks.
Where to find them
She lives with her family in Whiterun and works evenings at the Bannered Mare, serving drinks. If the Stormcloaks take the city, she moves into Dragonsreach.
Quests
- Battle for Whiterun: if the Stormcloaks win, her uncle Vignar Gray-Mane becomes Jarl and Olfina becomes his housecarl.
- Rescue Mission (Companions): she can be the person you have to save from a radiant location and escort home.
- The Fishing Job (Thieves Guild): Delvin Mallory may send you to lift a Diamond from her.
- Hunting the Monster (Dawnguard): Gunmar may need you to get the location of a Master Vampire out of her.
Personality & relationships
She is the daughter of Eorlund and Fralia Gray-Mane and sister to Avulstein and Thorald. Olfina thinks the feud with the Battle-Born clan is pointless, and she has a very good reason: she’s secretly seeing Jon Battle-Born. Pickpocket her and you’ll find a letter from him. Their chats at the inn are a highlight. Jon is writing her a ballad (it’ll only take a year or two), and she nudges him to go and talk to the Bards College.
She is touchy about her independence. When Ysolda asks why a Gray-Mane works at the inn, Olfina makes it clear she earns her own keep. When Anoriath teases her about Jon, she warns him that gossip can be bad for an elf’s health. If you join the Imperial Legion, or if one of her relatives dies, she makes no secret of hating you.
Good to know
- The Creation Kit suggests she was first meant to be called Olfine the Golden.
- The doomed romance across feuding families is widely read as a nod to Romeo and Juliet.
- She may send hired thugs after you if you steal from House Gray-Mane or the Bannered Mare, or if you kill Fralia during Deceiving the Herd.
