House Gray-Mane

Whiterun home of Eorlund Gray-Mane and his family, a sturdy house full of books where Missing in Action begins and The Shill Job ends.

House Gray-Mane is the family home of the Gray-Manes in Whiterun. Eorlund Gray-Mane built the solid house himself and lives here with his children. You’ll likely come knocking either to help a worried mother or, less nobly, to plant evidence for the Thieves Guild.

What you’ll find

  • Residents: Eorlund, Avulstein, Fralia, Olfina and Vignar Gray-Mane.
  • A small paddock with a cow outside.
  • Downstairs: a central fire pit, dining area, entrance alcove and Avulstein’s bedroom.
  • Upstairs: a landing and two bedrooms with books and valuables, usually necklaces.
  • A cooking pot you can use.

Quests

  • Missing in Action – start it by talking to Avulstein here, or Fralia will invite you over.
  • The Shill Job – a Thieves Guild task in which you plant a stolen sapphire in the house.

Notable items

  • Fine Clothes and Fine Boots.
  • Silver Sapphire Necklace and Silver Emerald Necklace.
  • A sizeable library, including The Arcturian Heresy, several volumes of The Real Barenziah and Biography of Barenziah, The Great War, The Book of Daedra, Mysterious Akavir, Myths of Sheogorath and Brief History of the Empire, v2.

The family

Eorlund is the patriarch and builder of the house, and the residence is shared with his children. Avulstein has his own bedroom on the ground floor, and both he and Fralia are your way into Missing in Action. Olfina and the elder Vignar round out one of Whiterun’s best-known households, whose name carries real weight in the city.

Tips

The easiest legal way in is Missing in Action – Fralia invites you, so you can wander around without picking a single lock. If you’re here for The Shill Job, the outside wall carries the Loot shadowmark, a hint that the Guild already has its eye on the place. Book collectors should clear an afternoon: the shelves are well stocked. Watch out near the window, where a glitch can make you sink beneath the city.
