Hemming Black-Briar is a Nord, the eldest son and heir of Maven Black-Briar, and the father of Sibbi and Ingun. He lives in Black-Briar Manor in Riften, wears fine clothes and a fine hat, and acts like a man of great power. Everyone knows his mother holds the real power, and he lives firmly under her thumb.
Where to find them
Black-Briar Manor, where he’s sometimes found asleep next to Maven. If the Imperial Legion takes Riften in the civil war, Maven becomes Jarl and Hemming is made her steward.
Services
As steward (Imperial outcome only) he sells you the house Honeyside and its upgrades.
Personality & relationships
Hemming brags about being trained by some of Skyrim’s finest swordsmen, sneers at adventurers, and dreams of taking Black-Briar Mead to all of Tamriel once he’s in charge. He’s sure Sibbi will make a fine leader, and less sure about Ingun, whose mind isn’t on business. Maven doesn’t trust him much; she tells him so and adds that at least he’s family. When he complains about her protecting Sibbi, she reminds him she expects the same unquestioning obedience from her own son. As steward he once argues for releasing a prisoner whose family is offering a fat payment, then gives in the moment she questions his nerve.
He’s no nicer to anyone else. He leans on Bersi Honey-Hand for his mother, insults Talen-Jei after the Argonian turns down a job as his valet (and gets threatened for it), and propositions Wylandriah, who answers with a threat involving a shrinking spell. He tells Maul that his mother simply knows which pockets to line. Maven’s warning to Haelga to stay away from him is one of the first things you may overhear in Riften.
