Wylandriah is a Bosmer mage and court wizard to Jarl Laila Law-Giver, working out of Mistveil Keep in Riften. Research is her whole life and she cares about little else. She is also spectacularly forgetful: she talks to herself, loses her train of thought mid-sentence and leaves her belongings scattered across half the province.
Where to find them
In Mistveil Keep, usually in the middle of some ‘delicate experiment’ that you have just interrupted.
Quests
Offer to help her get organised and she sends you to fetch three items she left behind (a miscellaneous quest with no official name, often called Hunt and Gather):
- Dwemer Stirring Spoon – in her satchel on a table to the left of the fireplace at Fellstar Farm in Ivarstead. The house is usually unlocked in the late afternoon, when the owner heads inside.
- Orichalcum Ingot – in a satchel on the top shelf of The Frozen Hearth in Winterhold, on the right side of the room as you face the bar.
- Grand Soul Gem – in a satchel with her name on it, sitting on a barrel in the White Phial in Windhelm.
By the time you return she has completely forgotten asking, compliments you on your ‘uncanny foresight’ – and still pays you a reward.
Services
As court wizard she sells spells and alchemy supplies. Ask where to learn more magic and she points you to the College of Winterhold.
Personality & relationships
Ask about her work and she launches into a torrent of harmonic fields, soul siphons and thermic drift, cheerfully hailing nonsense answers like ‘seven’ or ‘swallow a soul gem’ as strokes of genius. She is also one of the very few people in Skyrim to point out that calipers are nowhere to be found.
Laila has her looking into whether her son Saerlund is cursed or possessed; Wylandriah’s verdict is that he genuinely believes what he says. If the Imperials take Riften, Hemming Black-Briar starts making advances. Her answer is sharp, cutting and suspiciously coherent, and she asks Maul to keep him away from her.
Good to know
The Official Game Guide claims her scatterbrained act is exactly that – an act to make people leave her alone. She once also baffled the College by asking them for Greenmote, which hints at a past trip to the Shivering Isles. If you pick up any of her items before speaking to her, she may behave as if the quest is active even though it never appears in your journal.
