Kraldar is a Nord noble in Winterhold, possibly one of the last of the town’s old aristocracy now that most of the city lies at the bottom of the sea. He starts out as a private citizen, but if you help the Imperial Legion win the hold in the Civil War, he replaces Korir as Jarl.
Where to find them
Before any change of power, Kraldar lives in Kraldar’s House in Winterhold with his loyal housecarl Thonjolf. Once he becomes Jarl, he moves into the Jarl’s Longhouse and holds court there.
If Winterhold is handed to the Imperials during the peace talks in Season Unending and you later win it back for Korir, Kraldar is sent into exile and ends up in Erikur‘s house in Solitude. Thonjolf goes with him.
Quests
- Becoming Thane of Winterhold – as Jarl, Kraldar is the one who can name you Thane of Winterhold.
- Rescue Mission – he is also tied to this quest in the Civil War storyline.
- Containment – when magic anomalies spill out over the town, he demands that whatever you are doing at the College be fixed at once.
Personality & relationships
Where Korir blames the College of Winterhold for everything, Kraldar takes the opposite line. He believes Winterhold’s best hope is good relations with the mages, calls them harmless scholars, and trusts Arch-Mage Savos Aren‘s word that the College had nothing to do with the Great Collapse. He even keeps inviting the Arch-Mage to dinner, despite Aren ignoring his last several invitations. Thonjolf is sceptical; Kraldar is sure he’s just been busy.
Kraldar loves to talk history. Ask him and he’ll explain that Winterhold was once an early capital of Skyrim, that the Oblivion Crisis turned locals against elves and mages, and that roughly eighty years ago the cliffs above the Sea of Ghosts gave way and took most of the city with them, while the College stood almost untouched.
Ever the optimist, he is convinced the town will rise again and happily shares his plans with Thonjolf. His other daily ritual is asking Thonjolf for the latest news, which in a town of a few houses is always the same: there is none. He is noticeably less chatty with Malur Seloth, the lazy Dunmer steward he inherits.
Good to know
During Season Unending, General Tullius, Ulfric Stormcloak and Arngeir all talk about Kraldar as if he were the Stormcloak Jarl. That’s a dialogue mix-up – he is the Empire’s man.
