Malur Seloth is a Dunmer who serves as steward to the Jarl of Winterhold. Serves is a strong word. Jarl Korir hired him because he assumed a dark elf must have ties to the College of Winterhold, and Malur has done his best to keep that misunderstanding alive while doing as close to nothing as possible.
Where to find them
He spends his time either in the Jarl’s Longhouse or lounging on a bench outside the Frozen Hearth inn. Unusually for a steward, he keeps the job if the hold changes hands, so you’ll still find him under the Imperial-backed Jarl Kraldar.
Quests
- Some Light Theft – ask what he does all day and he admits: nothing. To make his fake College connection look more convincing, he asks you to steal the Staff of Arcane Authority from Nelacar‘s room at the Frozen Hearth. Bring it back and he shares his tips for flattering royalty, which raises your Speech skill by one point.
- Bounties – the only official business he bothers with. He hands out jobs to kill bandit chiefs, dragons or troublesome giants.
Personality & relationships
Malur is gloriously honest about being a slacker. He freely says he doesn’t really know anyone at the College, and that people who think you’re a secret wizard let you get away with a lot. When the housecarl Thonjolf tries to give him a task, Malur turns it down before he even hears what it is. Under Kraldar, Thonjolf openly wonders why the new Jarl keeps him around, and Kraldar himself is far less chatty with Malur than with his housecarl.
Good to know
- In a fight he is about as useful as he is at work: he runs and cowers. Cast Fury or Courage on him and he’ll stand his ground with nothing but an iron dagger.
- Some of his lines still use old Dunmer voice clips, so he can sound like a different person when you ask him for work.
