Abecean Longfin

A small pond fish caught by hand in Skyrim's lakes and rivers – a handy base for Fortify Sneak and frost poisons.

The Abecean Longfin is one of the small fish you can scoop straight out of Skyrim’s lakes and streams with your bare hands. It’s worth a surprising 15 gold for something you caught while swimming, and it carries a useful mix of sneaky and nasty effects.

Alchemy effects

The effects are listed in the order you discover them by eating the ingredient or using it in a potion. Two ingredients make a potion when they share at least one effect.

  1. Weakness to Frost – a poison effect that makes the target take more frost damage. Also on: Elves Ear, Fire Salts, Ice Wraith Teeth, White Cap.
  2. Fortify Sneak – makes you harder to detect for a while. Also on: Beehive Husk, Frost Mirriam, Hawk Feathers, Human Flesh, Powdered Mammoth Tusk, Purple Mountain Flower.
  3. Weakness to Poison – a poison effect that makes the target more vulnerable to poison. Also on: Bleeding Crown, Chaurus Eggs, Deathbell, Giant Lichen, Pine Thrush Egg, Sabre Cat Tooth, Small Antlers.
  4. Fortify Restoration – makes your Restoration spells stronger for a while. Also on: Cyrodilic Spadetail, Salt Pile, Small Antlers, Small Pearl.

Tips and trivia

Fun detail: while the fish is still swimming, the game spells it “Abacean”. The typo fixes itself the moment it lands in your pack.

Values from the Skyrim game files (Skyrim.esm): base value 15 gold, weight 0.5.

Where to find it

  • Lakes, rivers and streams all over Skyrim – look for dragonflies hovering just above the surface, they often mark a school of fish.
  • Lake Ilinalta near the Guardian Stones is a safe early spot: swim slowly along the surface and grab them as you go.
  • The Riften Fishery and the waters of Lake Honrich between Riften and Ivarstead – check the fish barrels too.
  • The swamps around the Apprentice Stone west of Morthal, and the waters around the Abandoned Shack and the Wreck of the Winter War.
  • Fish barrels on docks and boats, and now and then at alchemy shops.
  • With Hearthfire you can breed them in the fish hatchery at Windstad Manor.
