Constance Michel is an Imperial who works at Honorhall Orphanage in Riften, assisting the infamous Grelod the Kind. Where Grelod is cruel, Constance is gentle, and the children adore her for it.
Where to find them
She works and spends her days at Honorhall Orphanage, dressed in a belted tunic and boots. You’ll often see Grelod barking orders at her about the children.
Quests
Constance is part of Innocence Lost. When you visit the orphanage, perhaps after hearing from Aventus Aretino, she admits Grelod is always that harsh but tries to steer you out, saying it’s unfair to raise the children’s hopes about adoption. Aventus asks specifically that Constance be spared. If Grelod dies, Constance panics and orders you out, but she won’t raise the alarm. She stays rattled until the quest is wrapped up, then becomes headmistress, and life at the orphanage gets a lot better.
Services
With Hearthfire (Hearthfire), Constance handles adoptions from Honorhall once Grelod is gone. A courier delivers a notice that the orphanage is under new management. She asks whether you have a home with a child’s bedroom and what you do for a living, then lets you talk to the child you want. Without Hearthfire, or while Grelod is alive, she simply says no adoptions are possible.
Personality & relationships
She is caring and protective of the children, yet she still makes excuses for Grelod as an old woman who knows no other life. She is the only person at Honorhall who seems genuinely sad when Grelod dies.
Good to know
Killing Grelod before Innocence Lost has started can leave Constance panicking indefinitely, so start the quest first.
