Unmid Snow-Shod is the Nord housecarl of Jarl Laila Law-Giver, standing guard in Mistveil Keep in Riften. Like the rest of the Snow-Shod family he is firmly in the Stormcloak camp, and he treats every visitor to the keep as a possible assassin until proven otherwise.
Where to find them
He stays close to the Jarl in Mistveil Keep. If you help the Imperial Legion take Riften, he goes into exile with Laila and her steward Anuriel at the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm, where he will make his contempt for you very clear.
Personality & relationships
Talk to him and the first thing he asks is that you keep a respectful distance from the Jarl. Bring up the war and he calls Ulfric Stormcloak a hero who deserves the crown. He also tells you there have been several attempts on Laila’s life – whether by the Dark Brotherhood or Imperial sympathizers, he can’t say – and that spies keep testing the keep’s defences, so he works with the city guard to keep them out.
He has nothing but scorn for the Thieves Guild. Given a dozen men he would gladly burn them out of the Ratway beneath the city, but the Stormcloaks need every sword for the war, and he won’t leave the Jarl unprotected to do it himself.
Unmid is the son of Vulwulf and Nura Snow-Shod, and the brother of Asgeir and the late Lilija. He is fiercely protective, talking Laila out of a stroll through the streets and scolding Anuriel for suggesting it. Their chats suggest that he and Anuriel are secretly lovers, complete with some suspiciously private ‘combat training’ sessions.
Good to know
Unmid is essential, so he can’t be killed. He wears Elven armor without the helmet and fights with a steel greatsword – an unusual look for anyone who isn’t Thalmor. Steal from Mistveil Keep and he may send hired thugs after you. Unlike the rest of his family, he doesn’t attend Vittoria Vici’s wedding during Bound Until Death.
