Degaine is a Breton beggar in Markarth, a former worker at the Cidhna Mine smelter whose injury left him begging for coin. He’s foul-mouthed, cheeky and never quite tells the same story twice.
Where to find them
Usually in The Warrens or at the Silver-Blood Inn, though he also hangs around the market stalls by the entrance or wanders the city.
Quests
- Steal the Statue of Dibella – he wants the statue from the Temple of Dibella and pays 150 gold when you bring it to him. If the priestesses catch you in the act, it can lead into “The Heart of Dibella”.
- Drinks – like other drunks, he’ll accept an alcoholic drink.
- Alms – give him a single gold coin to receive The Gift of Charity, raising your Speech by 10 for an hour.
Personality & relationships
Degaine has a whole menu of origin stories for his injury: a mining accident while serving time for pickpocketing, or a tumble off a cliff after a drunken party with the priestesses of Dibella. Cosnach believes neither. He also has an ongoing feud with the butcher Hogni Red-Arm, whom he cheerfully mocks as “Hogni Fat-Arm” while demanding free meat.
Good to know
- The statue quest is prone to getting stuck. If he won’t offer it, stealing the statue and bringing it to him anyway can complete both steps at once.
