Hamal, usually called Mother Hamal, is the Nord high priestess of the Temple of Dibella in Markarth. She runs a tight, very secretive ship, and the fastest way to meet her is to barge into a part of the temple you were absolutely not supposed to enter.
Where to find them
She is found at the Temple of Dibella, usually in or near the Inner Sanctum, where she leads the temple’s rituals.
Quests
Hamal starts The Heart of Dibella. Break into the Inner Sanctum, whether out of curiosity or because Degaine asked you to steal the temple’s Dibella statue, and you’ll walk in on a ritual meant to find the goddess’s new Sybil. Normally the penalty for intruding is grim, but the temple’s old Sybil has died, so Hamal offers you a deal instead: fetch the new one.
Her vision points to Karthwasten, and the trail leads to a girl named Fjotra, whom you end up rescuing from Broken Tower Redoubt. Bring her back and Hamal sends you to pray at Dibella’s altar, which grants the permanent Agent of Dibella blessing. You can also refuse the deal, which doesn’t end well.
Services
Hamal is a Master-level Enchanting trainer, able to teach up to skill level 90, but only after The Heart of Dibella is done. She is one of only two Master Enchanting trainers in the game.
Personality & relationships
She is gruff with intruders and protective of the temple’s secrets. The temple prefers to keep a Sybil’s death quiet until a replacement is ready, since people like to believe the priestesses are always in touch with their goddess. She apparently has no love for Betrid Silver-Blood: kill Betrid before The Forsworn Conspiracy and Hamal sends a letter of thanks.
Good to know
Hamal is not essential. If she dies before giving you her quest, The Heart of Dibella can’t be started. Stealing the Dibella statue may also get hired thugs sent your way, even if nobody saw you take it.
