Rorikstead

Quiet farming village on Whiterun Hold's western edge near the Reach, with the Frostfruit Inn, two farms, Rorik's Manor and the quests Erik the Slayer and A Night to Remember.

Rorikstead is a small farming village at the far western edge of Whiterun Hold, as far from Whiterun as you can get without crossing into the Reach. Cottages, two farms, an inn and a manor sit among green fields. Whiterun guards call it a nice but boring posting – and it is peaceful, mostly. It is a natural rest stop on the road toward Markarth.

Residents

  • Rorik – lives in Rorik’s Manor and says the village is named after him.
  • Jouane Manette – the healer who saved Rorik’s life during the war, now sharing the manor.
  • Mralki – a former soldier who runs the Frostfruit Inn.
  • Erik – Mralki’s son, who dreams of adventure.
  • Ennis and Reldith – they work Cowflop Farm together.
  • Lemkil – runs Lemkil’s Farmhouse on his own, much to his annoyance, because his young daughters Sissel and Britte refuse to help.
  • Whiterun guards keep watch over the village.

The Frostfruit Inn and services

The Frostfruit Inn is the heart of the village, run by Mralki with Erik’s help. It’s the place to grab a meal and a drink and to start Erik’s quest. Once Erik becomes Erik the Slayer, you can hire him here as a mercenary follower. The rest of Rorikstead is farms – Cowflop Farm and Lemkil’s Farmhouse – plus Rorik’s Manor.

Quests

  • Erik the Slayer – talk Mralki into letting his son become an adventurer. The pair travel to Whiterun to buy Erik armour, and he comes back with a new title and a price for hire.
  • A Night to Remember – after a lost night of revelry with Sam Guevenne, the priestess Senna at the Temple of Dibella in Markarth points you here. Ennis accuses you of stealing his beloved goat Gleda and selling her to a giant named Grok, who wanders off the road northwest of the village. Kill or outrun Grok, return Gleda, and Ennis sends you on to Ysolda in Whiterun.

Around the village

Lund’s Hut, a lonely shack, lies to the north, and the Forsworn camp of Serpent’s Bluff Redoubt sits up the hill to the southwest. Further afield are Talking Stone Camp, a giant camp to the northeast, and the cave Orotheim just north of it, plus Goldenhills Plantation and a dragon burial mound. On the hill due north of town stands a small shrine of Akatosh among ruined pillars, with a Dragon Scale and a copy of Kolb and the Dragon.

Tips

Because the village is so close to the Reach, you may arrive by fast travel to find Forsworn fighting the guards – lend a hand. On rare occasions a dragon may also swoop in from the east. Erik is a friendly early hire.

Good to know

  • Every house holds soul gems, several have books on Daedra and Daedric worship, and Sissel can be overheard asking Jouane for more magic lessons while he hushes her about “our secret”. Small-town farming life, sure.
  • Lokir, the horse thief from the opening cart ride to Helgen, comes from Rorikstead, though nobody in town mentions him.
  • An old book, Holdings of Jarl Gjalund, lists a “Rorik’s Steading” among a jarl’s holdings, possibly from before the First Era; Farengar and Delphine discuss it after you deliver the Dragonstone. Since Rorik claims the village is named after him, it may be a different, older settlement.
  • Rorikstead gets a mention in the bard song Ragnar the Red.
