Cyrodilic Spadetail

A pond fish caught by hand – one of the best sources of Fortify Restoration.

The Cyrodilic Spadetail is a small fish you can pull out of Skyrim’s lakes and rivers by hand. Despite the name, it’s perfectly at home up north. Fortify Restoration is the effect most people want from it, but Fear and Ravage Health also make it a decent poison ingredient.

Alchemy effects

The effects are listed in the order you discover them by eating the ingredient or using it in a potion. Two ingredients make a potion when they share at least one effect.

  1. Damage Stamina – a poison effect that drains the target’s Stamina on the spot. Also on: Berit’s Ashes, Blisterwort, Blue Butterfly Wing, Bone Meal, Canis Root, Crimson Nirnroot, Giant’s Toe, Jarrin Root, Nirnroot, Rock Warbler Egg, Spider Egg.
  2. Fortify Restoration – makes your Restoration spells stronger for a while. Also on: Abecean Longfin, Salt Pile, Small Antlers, Small Pearl.
  3. Fear – a poison effect that makes low-level creatures and people flee from combat. Also on: Blue Dartwing, Daedra Heart, Namira’s Rot, Powdered Mammoth Tusk.
  4. Ravage Health – a concentrated poison that lowers the target’s Health for a while. Also on: Eye of Sabre Cat, Giant Lichen, Jazbay Grapes, Silverside Perch, Skeever Tail.

Values from the Skyrim game files (Skyrim.esm): base value 15 gold, weight 0.25.

Where to find it

  • Lake Honrich next to Riften – swim for a while and you'll have plenty. The Riften Fishery and its barrels are good too.
  • Lake Ilinalta, starting near the Guardian Stones, is a safe early spot.
  • Rivers and streams across Skyrim – look for dragonflies hovering above the water.
  • The swamps near the Apprentice Stone west of Morthal.
  • Alchemists such as Arcadia's Cauldron sell them; apothecary's satchels may contain one; with Hearthfire you can breed them in a fish hatchery.
