Temple of Miraak

Ancient temple at the heart of Solstheim where Miraak once ruled as a Dragon Priest, now haunted by cultists and draugr and holding a Dragon Aspect Word Wall.

The Temple of Miraak stands at the center of Solstheim, beneath the Tree Stone, and is the seat of worship of the first Dragonborn, Miraak. It is one of the key story locations of the Dragonborn expansion: this is where Miraak’s influence over the island comes from, and where your first trip to Apocrypha begins. Nearby you will find the Snowclad Ruins.

What you’ll find

  • Miraak’s cultists, draugr and Draugr Deathlords.
  • The inner Temple of Miraak Sanctum, with a gatekeeper’s room and a chamber dominated by a statue of Hermaeus Mora.
  • Dragon skeletons everywhere – nineteen around the exterior and four more inside, including one hanging from the ceiling covered in moss.
  • A Word Wall for Dragon Aspect.
  • The Black Book Waking Dreams.

Quests

The Temple of Miraak – once you learn the temple is the source of Miraak’s influence, you head here and meet Frea of the Skaal, who is searching for enthralled villagers. Together you fight through the cultists, find Waking Dreams and read it, which pulls you into Apocrypha. There you meet Miraak, some Seekers and a tamed dragon, before he sends you back and the quest The Fate of the Skaal begins.

Notable items

  • Black Book: Waking Dreams.
  • Dragon Aspect Word Wall.
  • Ebony weapons from Draugr Deathlords, which appear here even at lower levels.

Tips

Frea is good company, so let her soak some hits from the cultists. Deathlords show up earlier than usual here, which is dangerous but also a shortcut to ebony-tier weapons long before you would normally see them. Don’t expect to harvest those many dragon skeletons – none are lootable and none give souls.

Good to know

Long before the Dragon War, Miraak ruled Solstheim from this temple as a Dragon Priest, then turned on his dragon masters by devouring their souls. Locals say the dragons struck back and the temple fell in a bloody battle. In the Fourth Era, Miraak – living in Hermaeus Mora’s realm – started bending the islanders to his will to rebuild it, and the temple visibly grows as the story goes on. Its map symbol is unique, too.
