Harrald is a Nord and the son of Jarl Laila Law-Giver of Riften. He’s a firm supporter of the Stormcloaks, sees Imperial spies around every corner, and has no time for travellers. Small talk with him goes about as well as you’d expect.
Where to find them
Either sparring in the training area outside Mistveil Keep or standing around the throne room inside.
Quests
Bring It! – Wondering why the Jarl’s son is carrying a dagger? According to Harrald, a sparring guard failed to duck as ordered and his sword hit the keep’s stonework, so it’s now being repaired by Balimund. Offer to collect it, bring it back, and after a grumble about how long you took he hands over a few random gems.
Personality & relationships
Harrald fears that his family could be exiled any day, and thinks hospitality has no place in wartime. He’s glad his mother keeps a level head, and he can’t forgive his brother Saerlund for praising the Empire out loud in the plaza. To Harrald that makes Saerlund a traitor, and he says he’d see him hanged if he sat on the throne himself. Laila won’t hear any more of it.
In private the picture gets murkier. Saerlund accuses him of only playing the hard-liner to please their mother, and Harrald more or less admits that what he really believes doesn’t matter, so long as Laila is happy. He also relays reports about people going missing in the sewers, passing on the steward’s reassurance that only a few skeevers live down there.
Good to know
- Kill him and Laila will send hired thugs after you.
- He may keep using his dagger even after you’ve returned the sword.
