Dengeir of Stuhn

The paranoid former Jarl of Falkreath, now a thane who sees Imperial spies everywhere and returns to the throne if the Stormcloaks take the hold.

Dengeir of Stuhn is an elderly Nord, once Jarl of Falkreath and now merely one of its thanes. His nephew Siddgeir holds the seat these days, and Dengeir will tell anyone who stands still long enough that he didn’t step down – he was pushed. He is a Stormcloak sympathiser in an Imperial-leaning town, and he is convinced the walls have ears.

Where to find them

Dengeir lives in Dengeir’s House in Falkreath together with his brother Thadgeir and his maid Tekla. If he gets his throne back, he moves into the Jarl’s Longhouse.

Quests

Some Light Theft – Dengeir claims he saw Lod the blacksmith writing a letter, surely bound for General Tullius. He wants you to break into Lod’s House and bring it to him. The letter turns out to be an order for iron ore rather than spy work, though Dengeir takes it as proof that the Empire has Lod forging arms for them. He pays you anyway.

Dark Ancestor – later he admits a family secret: a nearby grave has been dug up, and the man inside, his ancestor Vighar, was a vampire held in place by a wardstone that has now been stolen. He wants Vighar dealt with quietly before the family name is ruined. This job is no longer offered if he has become Jarl through the civil war.

Civil war – if you side with Ulfric and complete Rescue from Fort Neugrad, Dengeir is put back on the throne of Falkreath, with Tekla as his new steward and Helvard staying on as housecarl.

Personality & relationships

Paranoia is his defining trait, and it doesn’t fade even with the crown back on his head. His version of history: he discovered Imperial agents quietly buying influence around town, a few well-placed bribes later the nobles wanted a new Jarl, and the job went to Siddgeir, whom he regards as a lapdog of Cyrodiil. Siddgeir’s version is simpler – his uncle had grown too old and frail to rule. Dengeir even suspects Tekla of passing his secrets to his nephew, and his brother has to keep reminding him that she does no such thing. Thadgeir, at one point, gets accused too.

Ask why he backs the rebellion and he gives a surprisingly clear-eyed answer: he doesn’t think some emperor far away should decide how Skyrim lives, and while he knows Ulfric Stormcloak is selfish and power-hungry, he’d rather have the devil he knows. At the tavern he regularly complains about the mead and the meat to the server Narri, who points out that they had the exact same argument every week back when he was Jarl.

Good to know

  • Dengeir is essential and can’t be killed.
  • If the Stormcloaks get Falkreath during Season Unending and the Empire later takes it back, Dengeir and Tekla are banished to Windhelm, and his two quests can no longer be started.
  • His title points to Stuhn, the old Nordic god associated with ransom, regarded as a forerunner of Stendarr.
  • Irony alert: Lod, the man he suspects of spying, calls Dengeir his first loyalty and once served as his personal guard.
