Runil is an Altmer priest of Arkay who tends the shrine in the Hall of the Dead in Falkreath, while his assistant Kust keeps up the huge graveyard outside. In the Great War he fought for the Aldmeri Dominion as a battlemage; today he is a frail old elf trying to live with what he did.
Where to find them
In and around the Hall of the Dead. On your first visit to town he is out in the cemetery, giving the eulogy at the funeral of Lavinia, daughter of Mathies and Indara Caerellia.
Quests
Find Runil’s Journal – he lost his journal in a cave he was exploring and will pay for its return. The journal turns up in a cave you haven’t explored yet. It is a record of his regrets, which he keeps so he never forgets them. Finishing this job counts toward becoming Thane of Falkreath. You can’t get it while you’re still busy with a job for Frida in Dawnstar.
Delivery – Thadgeir asks you to bring Berit’s Ashes to Runil, who promises proper rites for the old warrior and rewards you.
Morwen’s request (Dragonborn) – on Solstheim, a Skaal woman named Morwen asks you to deliver her mother’s necklace to Runil.
His service for Lavinia also leads into Ill Met by Moonlight, which starts when you speak to Mathies afterwards.
Services
He trains Conjuration up to Common level – though he warns you to be careful with it.
Personality & relationships
Runil is warm and gently philosophical, forever reminding people that life is short and should be enjoyed. He is grateful that Kust and the townsfolk have accepted him as one of their own, and he is a steady comfort to the grieving Mathies and Indara. He also thinks Dengeir deserves more respect than Jarl Siddgeir gives him.
Good to know
- Despite his past and his Conjuration training, he simply runs away when a fight breaks out.
- The game contains an unfinished quest where Runil confesses his years as a Thalmor battlemage; it was never completed, so you won’t see it in normal play.
- His journal mentions a vision that seems to describe meeting you.
