Dwarven Oil

Oil from Dwemer machinery – a Magicka ingredient with Fortify Illusion.

Dwarven Oil is the lubricant that keeps Dwemer machines moving – and, apparently, a decent magicka tonic. You’ll collect plenty while exploring Dwarven ruins. Restore Magicka, Regenerate Magicka and Fortify Illusion make it a natural pick for mages.

Alchemy effects

The effects are listed in the order you discover them by eating the ingredient or using it in a potion. Two ingredients make a potion when they share at least one effect.

  1. Weakness to Magic – a poison effect that makes the target more vulnerable to magic. Also on: Creep Cluster, Jazbay Grapes, Rock Warbler Egg, Salt Pile, Scaly Pholiota, Taproot, Torchbug Thorax.
  2. Fortify Illusion – makes your Illusion spells stronger for a while. Also on: Dragon’s Tongue, Mora Tapinella, Scaly Pholiota, Taproot.
  3. Regenerate Magicka – makes your Magicka regenerate faster for a while. Also on: Fire Salts, Garlic, Jazbay Grapes, Moon Sugar, Salt Pile, Taproot.
  4. Restore Magicka – instantly restores spent Magicka. Also on: Briar Heart, Creep Cluster, Ectoplasm, Elves Ear, Fire Salts, Frost Salts, Giant Lichen, Grass Pod, Human Flesh, Moon Sugar, Mora Tapinella, Pearl, Red Mountain Flower, Taproot, Vampire Dust, White Cap.

Tips and trivia

Dwarven Oil has exactly the same four effects as Taproot – mix the two and you get all four in one potion. With Dragonborn, it’s also needed to craft Dwarven oil spiders.

Values from the Skyrim game files (Skyrim.esm): base value 15 gold, weight 0.25.

Where to find it

  • Any Dwemer ruin – in containers and on the ground.
  • Dwarven automatons sometimes carry some, like Dwarven spiders and spheres.
  • A side room in the Ragged Flagon Cistern in Riften, and the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.
  • Alchemists sell it, and it turns up in random loot.
