Yngvar the Singer

Yngvar the Singer is a Nord bard turned Silver-Blood enforcer in Markarth who greets outsiders with menace but can help you write a love poem for Faleen.
“Blood and silver, friend. Blood and silver.”

Yngvar the Singer is a Nord who once studied at the Bards College in Solitude, then worked out that a strong arm pays a lot better than a lute. These days he’s muscle for the Silver-Blood family in Markarth, working as their lookout and occasional skull-cracker. The nickname stuck, even if the singing didn’t.

Where to find them

During the day he hangs around the Silver-Blood Inn; at night he’s at the Silver-Bloods’ Treasury House. If the city ends up in Stormcloak hands, he moves into Understone Keep as the new Jarl’s housecarl.

Quests

In The Book of Love, Calcelmo wants to win over Faleen and sends you to Yngvar, who happens to be a close friend of hers. He tells you she likes poetry and offers to write a poem on behalf of her secret admirer, for a fee of 200 gold. Pay up and he heads straight for the Silver-Blood Inn to drink the money, unless he is busy being a housecarl at the time.

He also has a cameo at the start of The House of Horrors, where he tells Vigilant Tyranus that the house in question has always been abandoned and then strolls off.

Personality & relationships

His opening line asks whether Markarth is bloody enough for you, and his speech about ‘blood and silver’ is basically the city’s unofficial motto. He explains that the Silver-Bloods own the mine, the smelter, the inn and half the city, and that the guards check with them before making arrests. Ask whether he lives here and he’ll describe a nice house in Solitude instead, with golden-haired girls polishing his shield; he has a reputation as a ladies’ man. Bothela claims the family sends him round to her shop now and then to squeeze money out of her.

If Season Unending hands Markarth to the Stormcloaks, he becomes housecarl to Thongvor Silver-Blood, and spends council meetings needling the steward Reburrus Quintilius and cheering any request for more muscle. He also reminds you that killing you would now be perfectly legal. Kill Thonar Silver-Blood and he will make it clear he’d like to rearrange your face.

Good to know

Yngvar is essential, so he can’t be killed. If he becomes Thongvor’s housecarl and the Empire later wins the war, he follows Thongvor into exile in Windhelm, which can turn him unfriendly and block his Book of Love dialogue. Waiting for him to move around may bring the option back.
