Torbjorn Shatter-Shield heads Clan Shatter-Shield, one of the wealthy Nord families of Windhelm, whose shipping business is run from an office on the docks. He’s a big, blunt warrior type, but these days he’s mostly a broken father: his daughter Friga was one of the Butcher’s victims, and he admits he’s been getting through the days with a lot of strong mead.
Where to find them
He’s usually around the Blacksmith Quarters in Windhelm’s market district, and the clan’s family home is nearby in the city.
Quests
In Rare Gifts, Torbjorn asks you not to bother his wife and explains he’s looking for an Amulet of Arkay to reassure her that their daughter is with the gods. The easiest one to grab is at Wayward Pass; he pays you for it. For A Few Words with You, Scouts-Many-Marshes sends you to talk him into paying the Argonian dockworkers more. You can persuade, bribe or intimidate him, and a failed threat turns into a brawl. If you’ve already done Rare Gifts or the drink-delivery favour, he agrees outright, but makes it clear he’s doing it for you. In Rise in the East you can pickpocket the key to the Shatter-Shield office from him instead of tackling a master-level lock.
Services
Torbjorn trains Two-Handed up to expert level, insisting it’s all in the swing.
Personality & relationships
He’s married to Tova Shatter-Shield and is father to Nilsine Shatter-Shield. He thanks Hillevi Cruel-Sea for a mince pie and ends up telling her how Friga, a hopeless cook, once surprised everyone with a perfect leek soup. He’s less warm with Niranye, whom he warns about her rumoured Thieves Guild ties. His attitude to his Argonian workers, whom he dismissively calls “boots”, is far from kind.
Good to know
If Nilsine is assassinated in Mourning Never Comes, Tova takes her own life, leaving Torbjorn the last of his family, and his lines change to match. He also mentions Brond, a character who never made it into the game.
