Torsten Cruel-Sea comes from Clan Cruel-Sea, a family of sailors going back generations in Windhelm. Torsten himself ended up a farmer instead, as owner of Hollyfrost Farm just outside the city, and he openly wishes he’d gone to sea like his ancestors. He even tells you he should have been an adventurer.
Where to find them
He’s a member of the House of Clan Cruel-Sea in Windhelm and also drops by his farm. His farmhand mentions that the master sometimes comes out to work the fields himself. Torsten is essential, so he can’t be killed.
Quests
Torsten is the client in the Thieves Guild job Summerset Shadows, which Delvin Mallory sends you to. His daughter Fjotli was murdered a few months earlier, and he believes her jewellery was the motive. He says he already tracked down the Altmer responsible and dealt with him personally, hinting strongly that the man didn’t survive, but not before learning about a new rival thieves’ guild. Torsten wants a stolen silver locket, a family heirloom, returned, and points you towards Niranye. Bring back Fjotli’s Locket and he pledges his support to the Guild in Windhelm.
Personality & relationships
Who really killed Fjotli is murky: it may have been the Butcher or Linwe of the Summerset Shadows, and part of the evidence comes from Niranye, who might prefer the truth stayed hidden. Torsten still has big seafaring dreams: he pitches Ulfric Stormcloak on a Stormcloak navy staffed by the Cruel-Seas, and gets a polite “I’ll think about it”. With his farmhand Tulvur he’s the fussy boss, offering timber for rigging when Tulvur asks for tools and complaining that the farmhouse is filthier than a ship’s quarters. He also chats with Hillevi Cruel-Sea about how many tomatoes are ripening for Nilsine Shatter-Shield.
