Mathies is a Nord farmer in Falkreath, where he and his Imperial wife Indara Caerellia work Corpselight Farm. Their daughter Lavinia, not yet ten, was recently killed, and the first time you see the couple they are at her funeral in the town cemetery, with Runil leading the service.
Where to find them
Once the funeral is over he returns to his daily routine, tending the crops at Corpselight Farm in town. He also visits the Hall of the Dead with his wife.
Quests
Ill Met by Moonlight – ask Mathies about his loss and he tells you his girl was torn apart like prey, and that the man responsible, a labourer named Sinding, is locked up in the town jail. He can’t understand what kind of man does something like that, and sends you off to look at him if you can stomach it.
He can also turn up as the kidnapping victim in the Companions‘ radiant job Rescue Mission.
Services
He buys vegetables for a small price. Selling him crops counts as helping the people of Falkreath on your way to becoming Thane, and with Hearthfire, selling him a gourd is part of what gets you a housecarl at Lakeview Manor.
Personality & relationships
Mathies is a gentle, private man. He says he and Indara like to keep to themselves, praises his wife’s gift with animals, and thinks the war is pointless – as a Nord married to an Imperial, he knows the two peoples can get along. He calls Runil a true friend in their time of need. Ask about the town’s gloom or its enormous cemetery and he offers a farmer’s theory: centuries of battles, each one adding more graves, until the graveyard grew older and bigger than the town itself.
Good to know
- Kill Mathies and Indara may hire thugs to come after you.
- If he dies after you’ve finished Ill Met by Moonlight, he leaves you some gold in his will.
