Karl is an old Nord miner living in Dawnstar. He works for Beitild at the Iron-Breaker Mine and makes no secret of the fact that his wages go straight into his drinking budget.
Where to find them
During the day Karl works the smelter at the Iron-Breaker Mine. At night he moves his drinking outdoors and can be found outside the Windpeak Inn, cup in hand.
Quests
Karl is one of Skyrim’s many thirsty townsfolk: hand him an alcoholic drink and he’ll warm up to you afterwards. Small favours like this help build your reputation with the locals, which counts towards earning the title of Thane in this part of Skyrim.
Personality & relationships
Karl doesn’t think much of himself – he’s just a guy with a pickaxe who drinks his pay. Beitild suspects he drinks on the job, and he isn’t exactly denying it. Like everyone in town he’s suffering from the nightmares, and complains that no amount of booze lets him sleep.
He’s also the reluctant foot soldier in Beitild’s feud with the rival Quicksilver Mine. When she announces they’re at war with Leigelf, Karl points out, rather reasonably, that Leigelf is her husband, and later reminds her that they’re miners, not Legionnaires. She threatens his job, and he quickly backs down.
Good to know
If you kill Beitild in front of him, Karl will curse you for it.
