Banning is a dog breeder working at the Markarth Stables just outside Markarth. His family has trained war dogs for generations, and he even raised a whole litter for the Jarl. Friendly, practical and a little dry – right up until you learn what he likes for dinner.
Where to find them
Around the Markarth Stables, outside the city gate.
Quests
- Delivery – ask how long he’s been training dogs and he’ll remember he owes the keep some dog food. Offer to help and he hands you a parcel of spiced beef to take to Voada in Understone Keep, who looks after the Jarl’s dogs.
- The Taste of Death – Banning is one of the guests at the Coven of Namira’s feast in Reachcliff Cave, alongside Eola and Hogni Red-Arm. There he hints that his dogs eat the same meat he does, and recalls his first such meal: a hunting friend named Marex whom he “mistook” for an elk. Back in town he’d prefer you remember it as a pleasant dinner at a roadside inn.
Services
Banning sells a trained war dog, Vigilance, for 500 gold. You can’t buy him while another animal companion is following you.
Personality & relationships
He’s a man of few words – ask him about Markarth and his whole travel advice is “don’t fall.” He believes nobody should travel these roads without a dog at their side, in case Forsworn come out swinging.
Good to know
- If Banning dies before you buy Vigilance, the dog can’t be bought at all.
- If Vigilance dies, Banning won’t sell you another one.
