Hofgrir Horse-Crusher is a Nord and the owner of the Riften Stables, just outside Riften. He’s big, loud and very proud of his arms. He sells horses for a living, yet hasn’t climbed onto one in years, and the reason is right there in his name.
Where to find them
At the stables outside the city walls, which he calls a hiding place for weaklings. He’s training an apprentice there, Shadr.
Quests
Caught Red Handed – Haelga gave him a Mark of Dibella in return for a very personal favour, and Svana Far-Shield wants it. The persuade option won’t work on him even with 100 Speech, but intimidation or a bribe will.
Test of muscle – Tell him he doesn’t have the strongest arms in Skyrim and he’ll bet you his purse that he can win a fistfight. No weapons, no tricks, no magic. You’ll need to match the bet. Lose gracefully or win, and he admits that bragging gets expensive.
Rescue Mission – He’s one of the possible kidnapping victims in this radiant quest for the Companions.
Services
He sells horses for 1,000 gold each, already saddled.
Personality & relationships
Riding was his greatest love as a boy, but as he grew bigger his horses had to grow with him. Then one day, drunker than he’d ever been, he got onto a young colt and broke its back. He has been stuck with the nickname ever since, and he hasn’t ridden since. He’s not afraid of anything that roams outside the walls, and he’s happy to say so.
Good to know
- Don’t brawl too close to the horses. If one kicks him during the fight, it can count as an assault, turn bystanders hostile and land you a small bounty.
