Kyne’s Sacred Trials

Old hunter Froki Whetted-Blade sends you across Skyrim to slay seven ghostly guardian beasts in honour of Kyne, ending with the guardian troll.

Kyne’s Sacred Trials is a hunting pilgrimage given by Froki Whetted-Blade, an old Nord hunter living at Froki’s Shack in Falkreath Hold. Froki reveres Kyne, goddess of the storm and mother of men and beasts. He marks you so that her guardian spirits will appear to you, then sends you all over Skyrim to hunt them down. It is a long walk but very easy combat, and a fine excuse to see the map.

How to start

Find Froki’s Shack and talk to Froki. He tells you about Kyne’s trials and asks you to hunt the first three guardian beasts.

Walkthrough

The guardians look like normal animals, only translucent. When killed, they leave Ghostly Remains to loot instead of a corpse. Several sit at unmarked locations, so follow the quest markers.

First trial: wolf, skeever and mudcrab

Return to Froki once all three are dead.

Second trial: bear, mammoth and sabre cat

Report back to Froki again.

Final trial: the troll champion

Froki’s last target is the guardian troll in the Graywinter Watch cave, near the Ritual Stone east of Whiterun. Two ordinary trolls share the cave with the guardian. Once they are all dead, check the camp against the eastern wall. Froki’s Bow lies on a barrel there, next to the Archery skill book Vernaccus and Bourlor.

Return to Froki

Go back to Froki to finish the trials. He rewards you with Kyne’s Token, and the journal says you have earned the Blessing of Kyne.

Rewards

  • Kyne’s Token
  • Froki’s Bow and the skill book Vernaccus and Bourlor from Graywinter Watch

Tips and notes

  • Pick up Froki’s Bow before you report the troll kill. If you report first, you lose the chance to bring the bow up with Froki.
  • A ring of mushrooms near the guardian bear hides random loot; those mushrooms show Activate instead of Harvest.
  • The guardian mudcrab appears at a fossil, so it seems to be the spirit of that ancient giant mudcrab.
  • Bashing a guardian with the Aetherial Shield from Dawnguard strips away its ghostly look once the effect wears off, though it still leaves Ghostly Remains.
  • Save before starting: followers, and even horses, have been known to vanish during this quest.

Lore notes
