Hamvir’s Rest

Overgrown above-ground Nordic graveyard northwest of Dustman’s Cairn, haunted by draugr and skeletons, thick with nightshade and the final stop of the Headless Horseman.

Hamvir’s Rest is an open-air Nordic tomb at the southern foot of the mountains that separate Whiterun from Hjaalmarch, just northwest of Dustman’s Cairn. It is a quiet graveyard full of old markers and altars – quiet, at least, until the dead get up. Herbalists come for the nightshade, treasure hunters for the locked chest, and the curious come because a ghostly rider leads them here.

What you’ll find

  • A leveled draugr and a few skeletons guarding the graves.
  • Stone altars and gravemarkers spread across the hillside.
  • Eight Nightshade plants growing in and around the cemetery.
  • A skull beside one of the tombs that you can look at but not take.

Notable items

  • A chest with a Master-level lock at one of the altars.
  • Some loot beside the tomb on the left, which may include armour or a weapon.

Tips

Bring plenty of lockpicks, or a lot of patience, for the Master chest. If you are not ready for that lock yet, grab the nightshade and come back later – the graveyard is not going anywhere, and neither are its residents.

Nightshade is a staple for poison makers, so an alchemist can do a nice little harvest run here once the dead are back in their graves.

Good to know

Elsewhere in Skyrim you may spot the Headless Horseman, a ghostly rider who appears at night. Follow him and he will lead you here, racing to reach Hamvir’s Rest before morning. That is very likely a nod to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, where the headless rider also has to get back to his graveyard before daybreak. No pumpkins were harmed.
