Goat Hide is the bargain bin of Skyrim’s tanning racks. Worth only 5 gold and weighing 1, it is the one hide where you need 2 for a single piece of
Leather. Goats are everywhere in the mountains, though, and they tend to bleat their way into your arrows, so the hides pile up whether you want them or not. At least they are light enough not to slow you down.
How to get it
Hunt goats on rocky slopes, especially in the Reach around Markarth. Hunters and Orc hunters often carry a hide or two, and general goods merchants such as Belethor and Grelka sell them, as do Fethis Alor and Garyn Ienth on Solstheim.
Loose hides lie in Greenspring Hollow, Broken Oar Grotto, Glenmoril Coven and Understone Keep (2 each), with single ones in Hag Rock Redoubt, Steamcrag Camp and Dustman’s Cairn. Another 3 are placed outdoors near the Forgotten Vale.
If you are short on leather, hang on to goat hides until you have an even number, then tan them in pairs. Otherwise they make decent filler for a trip to the general store, where every merchant listed above will happily take them off your hands.
