Fort Greymoor is an old stone fort west of Whiterun and the Western Watchtower, just south of Dustman’s Cairn. When you first arrive it belongs to a gang of bandits. Clear them out and the fort eventually changes hands: whichever side won the Battle for Whiterun moves in, and if you stayed neutral, the Imperial Legion takes over after a few days anyway.
What you’ll find
- Courtyard: six bandits patrol outside, including one on a platform by the intact north tower who stays put until you get close – miss him and the fort won’t count as cleared. There’s a shack with a forge and a workbench, two horse stalls with a chest behind one, and another chest in the north tower.
- Five ways in – three into the fort proper and two into the prison. The local map helps you spot them all.
- Fort interior: three paths from the courtyard entrance, a big kitchen, a lower level with wolf pelts on a balcony, an adept-locked chest under it, three bear traps and a tripwire near a staircase. A novice-locked chest hides under a table upstairs.
- The far end: past a large dining room and a staircase, a room holds the boss chest and the skill book, followed by a small bedroom with the body of an Imperial soldier.
- Fort Greymoor Prison: one room with a large apprentice-locked cage. The dead hunter inside may carry something worth taking.
- Agnis, a Nord maid working in the kitchen, who isn’t hostile.
Quests
Contract: Kill Agnis – if you join the Dark Brotherhood, the friendly maid becomes a target. The fort also plays its part in the Civil War, since it gets garrisoned by the winning side.
Notable items
- Light Armor skill book Rislav the Righteous, on a pulpit next to the boss chest.
- Boss chest, plus several locked chests (novice, apprentice and adept).
- Wolf pelts, potions and a little coin scattered around.
Tips
Entering the prison from the courtyard is a classic trap: a bear trap waits right by the door, and you or your follower will probably step on it on the first move. Inside the fort, fights in one corridor tend to pull bandits from the other paths, so expect company. The courtyard forge is handy for patching up gear mid-raid. And go easy on Agnis unless you have a contract – she’s the only person here who isn’t trying to stab you.
