Conjuration Scrolls

Sixteen single-use Conjuration scrolls in Skyrim that summon atronachs, raise the dead, trap souls or send summoned Daedra back to Oblivion.

A Conjuration scroll holds a single casting of a Conjuration spell. Reading it reproduces that spell once, and you do not need to have learned the spell yourself, so even a character who has never opened a Conjuration tome can call up an atronach or drag a fallen enemy back to its feet. The scroll is gone after one use. The school’s scrolls cover three jobs: summoning Daedra to fight beside you, reanimating corpses, and dealing with Daedra that someone else has summoned. Soul Trap is the odd one out, filling a soul gem rather than adding to the fight.

Where to find them

The cheaper and mid-tier scrolls turn up as ordinary loot. Hostile mages often carry them, and they also sit in chests, dressers and on the altars of mage hideouts, while some are handed out as quest rewards. Court Wizards stock several of them, including the Flame and Frost Atronach, Raise Zombie and Dread Zombie scrolls. Command Daedra and Expel Daedra are sold by spell merchants, and Conjure Frost Atronach can also be bought at the College of Winterhold. Phinis Gestor is the vendor to visit for the strongest ones: he sells the Flame, Frost and Storm Thrall scrolls as well as Reanimate Corpse.

A few scrolls have fixed spots worth knowing:

  • Conjure Familiar – on an altar outside the exit of Fort Kastav next to some Fire and Frost Salts; on a shelf in the caged room past the Word Wall in Sunderstone Gorge; and on an altar in Rimerock Burrow beside a steel dagger and the Rueful Axe.
  • Conjure Frost Atronach – in the captain’s quarters of Fort Kastav.
  • Conjure Flame Atronach – in a burnt-out house east of Lost Tongue Overlook, in the southeast of the map.
  • Conjure Storm Atronach – Fellglow Keep during Hitting the Books, and possibly Embershard Mine.
  • Banish Daedra – on top of Fort Dawnguard (Dawnguard).
  • Storm Thrall – in the top-left corner of the Soul Cairn (Dawnguard): take the teleport up to the pedestal and look near the potions, not far from a Reaper Gem Fragment.
  • Dead Thrall – in Apocrypha during Black Book: The Sallow Regent (Dragonborn).
  • Frost Thrall – inside Chapter IV of the Black Book: Waking Dreams (Dragonborn).
  • Soul Trap – only at Tel Mithryn (Dragonborn).

Highlights

  • The Thrall scrolls. Flame, Frost and Storm Thrall summon their atronach permanently instead of for 60 seconds. At 500 gold each they share the top price in the school with Dead Thrall.
  • Dead Thrall. Raises a corpse for good, but only a humanoid one, according to its effect text.
  • Dread Zombie. Its description claims it only works on a weak body, yet it behaves like the Expert-level spell, which is strong enough to raise creatures such as cave bears.
  • Command Daedra. Rather than removing a powerful summoned or raised creature, it puts that creature under your control.
  • Banish and Expel Daedra. These send summoned Daedra back to Oblivion: Banish handles the weaker ones, Expel the powerful ones.
  • Soul Trap. If the target dies within 60 seconds, a soul gem is filled, which makes it a handy way to charge gems without knowing the spell.
  • Scroll of Revanant. This scroll’s in-game name is spelled “Revanant”. Its effect text is the same as that of the cheaper reanimation scrolls.

Tips

The three basic atronach scrolls can be crafted at the Atronach Forge underneath the College of Winterhold. Each recipe takes one Roll of Paper and one Charcoal plus a salt that matches the atronach: Fire Salts for Conjure Flame Atronach, Frost Salts for Conjure Frost Atronach and Void Salts for Conjure Storm Atronach.

Where to find it

  • Loot from hostile mages, chests, dressers and altars in mage hideouts
  • Quest rewards
