Lost Tongue Overlook is a dragon lair high on the slopes south of Riften. A stone stairway climbs to an exposed overlook where an ancient Word Wall stands, and more often than not a dragon is sitting right on top of it like it owns the place. Come here for the shout, the dragon soul and the view, roughly in that order.
What you’ll find
- A leveled dragon perched on the Word Wall, ready to defend it the moment you show up.
- A good chance of a second dragon joining in, since the area is a popular spawning spot for them.
- Before you have finished Dragon Rising, the wall is held by a necromancer and skeletons instead of a dragon.
- An ice magic trap just past the archway of rubble on the way up, powered by a soul gem.
- The Word Wall itself, which teaches a word of the Dismay shout.
Quests
The overlook can turn up as the target of a dragon bounty, and the wall is a classic stop if the Greybeards point you toward a Word of Power. It is also one of the places where Meridia’s Beacon can appear.
Notable items
- Word Wall – Dismay
- Possible spawn point for Meridia’s Beacon
Tips
The ice trap is easy to defuse once you know the trick: pull the soul gem out of it, walk around behind it to grab the gem, or simply shoot the gem with an arrow to knock it loose. Free soul gem, fewer frozen toes. When the dragon lands, fight from the stairs and rubble rather than the open platform so you have something to duck behind. If the dragon sits frozen on the wall and refuses to fight, players report that hitting it with Fire Breath or another offensive shout can kick the battle off. If you met the necromancer here early on, don’t be surprised if the corpses you left behind are still ash piles when you come back later.
Good to know
The name may be a nod to a “lost” language – either the tongue of the dragons or that of the Falmer. Either way, the dragon on the wall is fluent in fire.
