Hall of Valor

The great feasting hall of Sovngarde, where honoured Nord heroes such as Ysgramor and Jurgen Windcaller drink and sing forever during the main quest.

The Hall of Valor is the Nordic afterlife’s mead hall, standing in Sovngarde. It’s where the spirits of Nordic heroes feast, drink and sing about their own greatness for all eternity – reportedly also called Shor’s Hall. You visit during the main quest, on your way to the final battle with Alduin.

What you’ll find

  • Felldir the Old, Gormlaith Golden-Hilt and Hakon One-Eye, the three ancient heroes from the old battle against Alduin.
  • Jurgen Windcaller, founder of The Greybeards.
  • Ysgramor, leader of the Five Hundred Companions.
  • Olaf One-Eye, former Jarl of Whiterun, and Ulfgar the Unending, who claims to have met the Nerevarine.
  • Erlendr, Nikulas and Hunroor, three adventurers turned to stone by the wizard Grimkell while seeking Sovngarde.
  • Depending on your choices: Kodlak Whitemane after the Companions questline, Ulfric Stormcloak and Galmar Stone-Fist after an Imperial win, or Legate Rikke after a Stormcloak win (not fully confirmed).
  • Generic Heroes of Sovngarde wandering, playing music and swaying along when someone starts a song.

Quests

You come through here during Sovngarde, and the hall’s heroes help you in Dragonslayer.

Notable items

A Roasted Ox Head and two Roasted Ox Legs sit on the tables, and they exist nowhere else. The golden plates and tableware, sadly, are glued down.

Tips

Chat with everyone – the heroes love talking about boasting, food, drink and glorious deaths, and some even hint they were Dragonborn before you. Eat, drink and plop yourself on Shor’s throne; nobody minds. Don’t plan any heists though: sneaking and combat, shouts included, simply don’t work in here. Do your sightseeing before the fight with Alduin starts, because the hall locks once it begins.

Good to know

The hall draws clear inspiration from Valhalla, and the huge hawk reliefs on the walls represent Kyne, Shor’s warrior-wife. The heroes even talk in a rhythm reminiscent of Beowulf. If you beat the Ebony Warrior before defeating Alduin, he won’t be here, despite his dying wish (Dragonborn).
