Vahlok’s Tomb

Puzzle-heavy Nordic tomb south of Skaal Village, explored with Tharstan, holding all three Battle Fury words and the guardian Vahlok the Jailor.

Vahlok’s Tomb is an ancient Nordic tomb on Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It lies south of Skaal Village and east of Kagrumez, but you cannot get in until the quest Lost Legacy is underway – before A New Source of Stalhrim is completed, the entrance is blocked by rubble and the site does not even appear on the map. Inside rests Vahlok the Jailor, the famed guardian who banished Miraak to Solstheim.

What you’ll find

  • Five sections: a main chamber, north and south wings either side of it, a large platform pit and finally Vahlok’s burial chamber.
  • Far more puzzles than the average tomb – moving platforms, pressure plates, an impact stone and door puzzles.
  • Fewer draugr than you’d expect for the size; most of them crowd into the north wing.
  • Corrupted Shades, which only appear here and at the Statue to Meridia.
  • Vahlok the Jailor himself guarding the final chamber.
  • Burial urns scattered throughout, plus a firepit trap at the fork in the dungeon.

Quests

Lost Legacy – escort the historian Tharstan into the newly uncovered ruins, keep him alive and help him unravel the tomb’s secrets.

Notable items

  • All three words of Battle Fury: Loyal in the north wing, Valor in the south wing and Inspire in the main tomb, guarded by Vahlok. It is the only dungeon with all three Word Walls for one shout.
  • Amethyst Claw, Right Half – carried by the draugr guarding the Word Wall in the pressure plate room.
  • Amethyst Claw, Left Half – carried by the draugr guarding the Word Wall next to the impact stone puzzle.

Tips

Do both wings before heading for the final chamber: each wing’s Word Wall guardian carries half of the claw you need. Be careful around the firepit at the fork – if you open it and then hurl yourself in with Whirlwind Sprint, there is no way back out. Players have also discovered you can launch Tharstan into the pit with Unrelenting Force; he simply teleports out again, so it is pure (if questionable) entertainment.

Good to know

Unlike the base-game Dragon Priests, Vahlok has no mask bearing his own name. The tale of his struggle with Miraak is told in The Guardian and the Traitor. Some followers even comment on the hidden ruin when you walk past it before Lost Legacy reveals it.
