Ashfallow Citadel

Ash-buried fort on Solstheim’s southeastern tip where Morag Tong assassins guard a trap-filled gauntlet leading to Vendil Severin during the quest Served Cold.

Ashfallow Citadel is a half-buried fort on the far southeastern end of Solstheim, added with the Dragonborn expansion. It sits southwest of the Ramshackle Trading Post, and most visitors arrive here for one reason: to hunt down Vendil Severin of Raven Rock during the quest Served Cold. Expect a fort that has been converted into a training ground for professional killers, complete with chains, gates and plenty of things designed to hurt you.

What you’ll find

  • Morag Tong Assassins throughout, plus the Severin family themselves – Vendil, Mirri and Tilisu – as hostile targets.
  • An entrance hall drowned in ash piles, with a half-buried bookshelf holding an East Empire Company strongbox and a skeleton with minor loot by a window.
  • A barracks room with beds, shelves of Chitin heavy armor and Morag Tong armor, and an adept-locked safe with leveled valuables.
  • A workroom with soul gems, potions and a single table carrying both an alchemy lab and an arcane enchanter.
  • A long lower corridor of gates operated by pull chains, a side room carpeted in bear traps, a training ring with dummies and a leveled sword on a chair, swinging door traps with floor triggers and a sideways spike trap.
  • Two Heart Stone veins outside, to the left of the main building.
  • A large, roughly round final chamber where Vendil waits, with a chest against the far wall.

Quests

  • Served Cold – you come to meet the Redoran Guard and kill Vendil Severin, only to find the guard dead and the Morag Tong already waiting for you.
  • Fetch Me That Book! – Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold may send you here, but the way in stays sealed until Served Cold has started.

Notable items

  • Vendil Severin carries Chitin Bracers of Eminent Wielding and Chitin Armor of the Eminent Knight (both heavy).
  • The book Varieties of Faith in the Empire.
  • Morag Tong armor off the assassins and a spread of Chitin pieces in the barracks.

Tips

The gate puzzle is simply a long chain of pull chains: pull, walk forward, pull again. Watch the floor in the swinging-door corridor, because every pressure plate is an invitation to get slapped by a door. The two chains that open the final gate hide behind the right-hand swinging door, on the far side of two columns, next to a spike trap that fires sideways. Use the enchanter and alchemy lab mid-run – few dungeons hand you a free crafting desk this close to the boss. Players report that the last chain occasionally closes the rear door without opening the final one, so a spare save before it is wise. There is only one exit: back the way you came.

Good to know

Finishing Served Cold is what earns you Severin Manor, the only house you can own on the island.
