Hroggar is a Nord lumberjack who works at the local mill in Morthal. Not long ago his house burned down with his wife and daughter Helgi inside. He moved in with Alva almost immediately, so it is no surprise half the town thinks he started the fire himself.
Where to find them
At the mill during working hours, and otherwise at Alva’s house, which he guards for her during the day.
Quests
The Jarl asks you to look into the fire in Laid to Rest, and Hroggar is the obvious suspect. Talk to him and he is unnervingly calm: he has a better house now, the loss was a shame, and Alva takes care of him. Mention Helgi’s ghost and he says he doesn’t need her anymore. He even repeats Alva’s story that Laelette left to join the Stormcloaks because Thonnir beat her.
The truth is that Alva has him enthralled. Enter her house at night and he attacks you to protect her. Kill Alva and spare him, and Hroggar returns to his senses, thanks you for freeing him and admits he will never forgive himself for what happened to his family.
Services
He buys any firewood you chop, a handy bit of early gold.
Personality & relationships
Hroggar is quiet and keeps to himself, dismissing talk of spirits and monsters as superstition. Around town he has a reputation as a kinslayer: Benor calls him a murderer, and Gorm thinks Alva treats him badly. With Alva he is doting, always asking if she needs anything or is hungry. She always is.
Good to know
Despite being the main suspect, Hroggar is not essential. If a dragon or vampire kills him, the quest still works and everyone talks as if he were alive.
