Ahtar

Ahtar is Solitude’s Redguard headsman and head jailor of Castle Dour, a two-handed brute who becomes a follower after you clean up his escaped-prisoner mess.
“Keep your head about ya.”

Ahtar is a Redguard warrior who serves as the headsman of Solitude and head jailor of the Castle Dour dungeon. You meet him the moment you first enter the city, as he beheads Roggvir on the orders of Captain Aldis. Quite the first impression.

Where to find them

Ahtar sleeps at the house of his girlfriend, the food vendor Jala. He leaves around 7 in the morning and is at work in the Castle Dour dungeon from about noon. If he is not at either place, try The Winking Skeever.

Quests

Kill the Bandit Leader: Ahtar confesses he may have “accidentally” let a bandit leader escape, then told everyone the man died during questioning. He asks you to track down Captain Hargar at Broken Oar Grotto and make sure he stays dead. If Hargar is already gone, he is meant to send you after the leader of Orphan’s Tear instead. He is very clear that he wants the man dead, not alive. Finish the job and he hands over the promised coin and becomes available as a follower.

He is also a potential recruit for the Blades.

Follower & marriage

Once his favour is done, you can ask him to join you. He is a heavy hitter built around Two-Handed weapons, Block and Heavy Armor, and he swings the unique Headsman’s Axe, the same axe used on Roggvir. He also wears unique armor with a dagger built into it that he never draws and that you cannot take. If you pickpocket the axe, he switches to an Orcish sword. Ahtar is the only Redguard follower in the base game.

Personality & relationships

Ahtar has a dry, gallows sense of humour. He describes jailing as easy work, as long as you can tune out the begging, and happily warns visitors that the dungeon breaks the strongest will. He says Sybille Stentor occasionally drops by looking for “volunteers”, and he would love to execute Jaree-Ra, whom he blames for showing up after High King Torygg’s death. Ask if the job keeps him busy and he shrugs that it is usually quiet, since there is no execution on the schedule. He and Jala are a couple, though not married.

Good to know

If Captain Hargar dies before Ahtar gives you his quest, for example through another bounty or by clearing the cave early, Ahtar may never offer it, which locks him out as a follower. Talk to Ahtar before you go anywhere near Broken Oar Grotto. If Ahtar himself dies, his Headsman’s Axe can be looted, but his armor and dagger cannot.
