Thane of Haafingar is how you become an honorary Thane of Haafingar, the hold ruled from Solitude. Jarl Elisif the Fair offers the title, but first you need to prove yourself to her court, help her people and own a rather expensive house. It is the priciest Thane title in Skyrim, and the house that comes with it lives up to the bill.
How to start
- Visit the Blue Palace in Solitude and talk to the steward, Falk Firebeard.
- Falk hands you The Man Who Cried Wolf: investigate the strange lights and sounds coming from Wolfskull Cave in the mountains west of Solitude.
Walkthrough
Befriend the jarl
Finish The Man Who Cried Wolf and report back to Falk for your reward. Then speak to Elisif herself. She thanks you and has one more request, the quest Elisif’s Tribute: place the war horn of her late husband, High King Torygg, on a Shrine of Talos as a tribute to him. Take the horn to the shrine the quest points to, set it at the foot of the Talos statue and return to Elisif. Now she invites you to become her Thane, once you meet the requirements.
Requirements
- Purchase Proudspire Manor for 25,000 gold. This is Solitude’s house for sale; ask the steward about buying it.
- Assist five citizens of Haafingar.
Easy ways to help the people of Haafingar
- Ahtar: kill a bandit leader for him (Broken Oar Grotto or another target).
- Angeline Morrard: No News is Good News, ask Captain Aldis about her daughter.
- Evette San: The Spiced Wine, persuade Vittoria Vici to release a spice shipment.
- Captain Aldis: find him a copy of The Mirror.
- Octieve San: convince Irnskar Ironhand to forgive his debts.
- Sorex Vinius: deliver Stros M’Kai Rum to Falk Firebeard.
- Noster Eagle-Eye: recover his helmet, or simply give him a coin. Dervenin at the Temple of the Divines also accepts a coin.
- Chop wood for Hjorunn at the Solitude Sawmill or Horgeir in Dragon Bridge; gather crops for Azzada Lylvieve in Dragon Bridge or at Katla’s Farm.
- With the Investor perk, invest 500 gold in any Solitude shop.
The Wolf Queen Awakened, which Falk starts by courier some time after Wolfskull Cave is cleared and you have leveled up, is not required for the title but also counts as helping a citizen.
Return to the jarl
With the manor bought and five citizens helped, return to Elisif. She names you Thane of Haafingar and gives you the Blade of Haafingar.
Rewards
- Title of Thane of Haafingar
- Blade of Haafingar
- Housecarl: Jordis the Sword-Maiden, who waits at Proudspire Manor and can follow you
- Proudspire Manor as your Solitude home
Tips and notes
- The quest log entry often only appears once the house is bought and at least one citizen has been helped; it then shows a counter out of five.
- Citizens helped before you received the task may not count correctly. Helping one more person pushes the counter to 6/5 and completes the step.
- Jordis can later join the Blades in Rebuilding the Blades.
- Compare the requirements in other holds, for example Thane of Whiterun and Thane of Winterhold.
