Falkreath Watchtower

A ruined watchtower between Falkreath and Lake Ilinalta where a lone necromancer camps beside a corpse, with a Conjuration skill book and many radiant quest items.

Falkreath Watchtower, also called Crossroads Watchtower in the game files, is a crumbling tower on the road between Falkreath and Lake Ilinalta. Instead of guards you’ll find a single necromancer living at the top – and he has company of the very quiet kind. It’s a quick stop, but radiant quests send people here surprisingly often.

What you’ll find

  • A leveled necromancer camping on the top floor next to a tent and bedroll.
  • A dead Khajiit woman laid out on an offering table. As soon as the necromancer turns hostile, he raises her to fight for him.
  • A chest beside the tent.

Quests

The tower is a possible location for items in a long list of quests:

  • Onmund’s Request – the staff needed to win back Onmund’s family amulet.
  • Shalidor’s Insights – a chest at the top may hold Shalidor’s writings for Urag gro-Shub.
  • A possible spot for the Staff of Tandil, wanted by Enthir.
  • Totems of Hircine and Family Heirloom (a Companions job to recover a stolen valuable).
  • Ancient Power and Lost Relic (Dawnguard) – remains of an elder vampire, or the Dawnguard Rune Axe for Florentius Baenius.

Notable items

  • Conjuration skill book Liminal Bridges – next to the bedroll in the tent at the top.

Tips

Climb up quietly: a sneak attack on the necromancer before he notices you means the poor Khajiit stays dead. If he does reanimate her, her body crumbles to an ash pile when the spell ends, and that’s how you’ll find her on later visits – still lootable for random clothes and bits, but definitely not coming back. Grab the skill book while you’re up there; it’s an easy point in Conjuration.

Good to know

Because so many radiant quests can pick this tower, it’s worth checking the chest at the top each time a quest-giver mentions it – the item you’re after is often simply waiting there. The tower sits right on the way between town and the lake, so it’s an easy detour on the road to Half-Moon Mill or Ilinalta’s Deep.
