No News is Good News is one of the quieter, sadder errands in Skyrim. In Solitude, the capital of Haafingar, the shopkeeper Angeline Morrard has not heard from her daughter Fura, who joined the Imperial Legion and was posted to Whiterun. The army will not tell her anything, so she asks you to try. As the title hints, the answer is not the one she hopes for.
How to start
Visit Angeline’s Aromatics in Solitude and talk to Angeline Morrard. She asks whether you have been to Whiterun and whether you have met her daughter Fura, an Imperial soldier stationed there. She has tried asking Captain Aldis herself without success. Agree to help and the quest starts.
Walkthrough
Ask Aldis for information about Angeline’s daughter
Find Captain Aldis, the commander of Solitude’s guard, who can usually be found in the courtyard near Castle Dour. When you bring up Fura, he refuses: details about soldiers are given out on a need-to-know basis. You have the usual options to change his mind:
- Persuade him with a Speech check.
- Bribe him with gold.
- Intimidate him.
- Order him to talk. This extra option is meant for those who have finished the Imperial civil war questline with Reunification of Skyrim, giving you the rank to command him.
Once he gives in, Aldis admits that Fura was killed while serving near Whiterun.
Tell Angeline what Aldis said
Return to Angeline’s Aromatics and break the news. Angeline tells you that she cannot thank you for bringing such news, but that she is grateful to finally know what became of her daughter. The quest ends there.
Rewards
- No material reward. The payoff is closure for a grieving mother.
Tips and notes
- If you are low on Speech and gold, the bribe is usually the most reliable way through Aldis; otherwise come back after leveling Speech.
- The order option has been reported to appear even for characters who never finished the Imperial questline, or who sided with the Stormcloaks. It still works, but in that case you get no Speech experience from it.
- Do this quest before wrapping up the civil war on the Stormcloak side, because Aldis may leave the courtyard afterwards (see known bugs).
